COD MW4 beta loses 65% of Steam players during opening weekend

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) early access beta has experienced a steep decline in players during its first weekend.

According to data from SteamDB, the number of players peaked at 115,145 on August 21. However, they dropped to less than 38,000 players just three days later. This number is based strictly on Steam players and does not account for players on PlayStation or Xbox, which means it does not give a full depiction of the game’s current overall player count. Beta Steam statistics displayed a strong initial launch, but activity quickly dropped. A peak count of 60,000 players was reported during the first 24 hours, while the number of players on the next day reached 51,582. For comparison, the Modern Warfare II beta had a peak of 168,330 concurrent Steam players in 2022.

Players raise concern about performance and gameplay

Steam reviews brought attention to problems such as PC performance, frame pacing, mouse input, aim assist, weapon effectiveness, spawn mechanics, matchmaking, and the design of various maps.

Players complained about frame pacing issues even when there were no problems with frame rate, and they also faced delays while using the mouse, which made aiming inaccurate.

Additionally, players criticized the maps and combat, claiming that the beta provided arcade-like gameplay.

Infinity Ward took all of this feedback into account in their beta update, which reduced footstep volume and made weapons less lethal while introducing map voting, the Cachette map, and Inflation mode. Because the beta version aims to collect feedback before launch, it allows Infinity Ward to find solutions early.

Open beta could change picture

The MW4 early access beta phase takes place from August 21 to 25. The open beta will start on August 28 and last until September 1, allowing all gamers across different platforms to take part without making a preorder. The open beta can serve as a clearer indicator of what Modern Warfare 4 will be like.

A potential increase in player numbers will show whether the initial decline was simply motivated by the game’s beta status. Moreover, given the official game launch is happening on October 2026, Infinity Ward still has a two-month window to fix all highlighted issues.
