Fortnite’s ultra-rare Pirate Shop reward triggers a shady third-party black market

What was meant to be an exciting, ultra-rare seasonal reward in Fortnite has devolved into a shady underground economy for the fanbase. With the release of the “Treasure Hunters” update, Epic Games introduced the new Pirate Shop Access token, a rare chest drop that unlocks 14 days of free Item Shop claims.

However, because pulling a token grants the perk to an entire Battle Royale squad, some players have turned the feature into a booming grey-market business.

The situation has escalated beyond simple squad invitations, with paid farming services, questionable automation tools and even Fortnite accounts containing the rare reward appearing on third-party marketplaces. Epic Games has now publicly addressed the situation, warning players against buying accounts or using fake tools to obtain Pirate Shop Access.

Fortnite’s 14-day Pirate Shop pass has spawned a black market

The mechanics behind the Pirate Shop reward make it incredibly valuable. When a player finds a token from a chest, it grants two separate 14-day activation windows, one for 2026 and another for 2027. During these periods, players can claim eligible V-Bucks cosmetics from the Item Shop for absolutely free. Any cosmetics claimed remain permanently in their lockers.

Seeing the potential for making some real-world money with this mechanic, some players have come up with unusual ploys. As the token is shared between every team member in the lobby, sellers on third-party sites and Discord trading servers are offering paid carries, allowing other players to join their squads in the hope of obtaining the reward.

According to reports, the underground market has gone considerably further. Some sellers are advertising tools that allegedly automate chest farming, while others are offering services to search for the token on behalf of players.

One particularly striking example was reported by Dexerto, which identified a seller advertising a $200 service to open up to 1,000 chests on a player’s account. The seller acknowledged that finding the token was not guaranteed.

Even more eye-catching is an eBay listing advertising a Fortnite account containing Pirate Shop Access for $10,000. The account reportedly includes more than 400 cosmetics, with the seller claiming that the reward has not yet been activated.

It’s worth noting that Pirate Shop Access itself cannot simply be transferred between accounts. Anyone purchasing such a listing would effectively be buying the entire Fortnite account, rather than the token independently.

What are the fans saying about the Pirate Shop?

The black market surrounding Pirate Shop has sparked substantial discussion across online communities, with players questioning both the reward’s rarity and the lengths others are willing to go to obtain it.

On X, a user named @BriggsTwins pointed out the absurdity of the whole situation by saying:

“I feel like buying the item you want in the item shop costs far less than buying an account that’s worth 10k.”

The discussion has also raised questions about the fairness of the reward system. Some players claim to have found Pirate Shop Access after opening relatively few chests, while others have spent considerable time searching without any luck.

The widely circulated drop-rate estimates have added to the frustration, although Epic Games has not published an official probability for finding the token.

Epic Games responds to Pirate Shop scams

With paid services and account listings attracting increasing attention, Epic Games has now stepped in to address the situation.

On November 3, the official Fortnite Status account responded to a post discussing the emerging black market, warning players against purchasing accounts or using third-party tools.

Epic’s response was straightforward:

“Buying an account or using fake tools is a scam. This is just like any of the chests in Battle Royale, so every player has an equal opportunity to find Pirate Shop Access.”

The statement reinforces that Pirate Shop Access is intended to be obtained through normal gameplay rather than purchased from another player or unlocked using unauthorised software.

There are also legitimate risks involved in these offers. Buying and selling Fortnite accounts is prohibited under Epic’s rules, while third-party automation tools can expose players to account bans and potential security issues, particularly when they require access to account credentials or a player’s computer.

Interestingly, Epic’s response has not entirely settled the discussion. Some players have pushed back against the idea of equal opportunity, arguing that the randomness of the reward makes the experience feel particularly unfair for those who have spent hours searching without success.

From our perspective, Epic Games unintentionally created a black market by pairing an exceptionally rare reward with a shared squad mechanic. When an item offers potentially hundreds of dollars’ worth of free cosmetics, players will inevitably look for ways to monetise it.

If Epic wants to stomp out scammers and third-party sellers, making future seasonal perks individual or tweaking how party rewards are distributed could be worth considering. More transparency around drop rates would also help manage player expectations.

For now, players are better off sticking to legitimate gameplay rather than risking their accounts or money on questionable shortcuts.
