G2 SunPayus at IEM Kraków: “When we are good, we are really good”
G2 are one of the teams fighting for the IEM Kraków trophy inside the Tauron Arena. They’ll be facing MOUZ in the second quarter-final.
We got to speak with Alvaro “SunPayus” Garcia ahead of the playoffs.
Bruno: We’re here at IEM Kraków. Hello, SunPayus, congrats on making it to the playoffs.
Sunpayus: Thank you.
What are your thoughts on your team’s performance so far in the event?
SunPayus: I’m really happy. I think we even… the only team we lost is Spirit and I think we put on… we had all the chances to win them. It was just a tough fight. So I’m really happy because our main goal would be like, when we are like low and we are like struggling in-game, we put a good mentality and we try to get this comeback and fight for it, you know. And I think we are improving because we had a lot of talks after the last season about it. So I’m really happy.
Is that what you focused on during the break?
SunPayus: Yeah, yeah, we were because, I mean, the basic summary is like when we are good, we are really good. But when we were not that good, we were performing really bad, you know, and we were getting smashed. So we wanted to put this low level higher. So it will be just consistency.
Bruno: Nemanja “huNter-” Kovac has been the in-game leader for over six months now.
How has he evolved? Do you think he’s gotten much better over the last six months?

SunPayus: Yeah, I think he’s great. He is playing good, he performs good individually, he’s improving a lot. Everyone is trying also to help and I think he’s a smart person, you know, so at the end I think he’s adapted really well.
Bruno: Obviously he’s working alongside Eetu “sAw” Saha, your former coach on ENCE.
Is the leading style similar to what you had on ENCE or is it different?
SunPayus: Oh no, it’s different. I think sAw is adjusting, obviously depending on what kind of IGL he has, right? On ENCE we had Snappi, who was a different IGL from Hunter. The way they see the game is different. So I think the coach and the IGL, they build together the system, how it’s going to be for us.
What are your thoughts on the map pool changes?
SunPayus: Well, I think Train was not really good in terms of how they put the trains. I think it was pretty much CT-sided because the teams didn’t have a lot of space to do fast plays, I would say. So I’m happy Anubis is back. I think the whole change is a bit good, I would say. It’s a bit less T-sided, but it’s still T-sided, the map.
I just hope they make one more change somehow, like just change one more map. I don’t know which map, but put another, I don’t know, basic map like Tuscan, Cache, Cobblestone, something back.
Bruno: You are playing MOUZ in the quarterfinals.
What do you think about them as a match-up for you?
Sunpayus: Well, I think they are a great team. They have been showing last season also, like they can approach, they can get to finals, they can even be really close to win events, right?
We need to be on top and I think we, like to be honest, I don’t know who can win this tournament. I think every team is able to win it. So we’ll try to do our best and we’ll try to get to win them.
Bruno: Thank you and good luck in the playoffs.
SunPayus: Thank you.
