Minecraft’s Mounts of Mayhem proves Mojang was right to drop the Mob Vote

On Sep. 27, during a Minecraft Live presentation, Mojang unveiled Mounts of Mayhem, a major feature drop set for release in November-December 2025. Part of Mojang’s new system of game drops, rather than huge updates, this is actually the fourth drop of this year, and it promises to shake up both combat and exploration in Minecraft.

With almost hundreds off changes coming to Minecraft in 2025, it’s been one of the most active years for the games development since we can remember. And the switch has come following the abandonment of the Mob Vote system, the decisive democracy that saw some features discarded. So has Mojang cracked it? We think so, and the latest feature-filled update proves that Mojang was right to change how it handled updates. But lets dive into what’s being added first.

What’s coming to Minecraft in the Mounts of Mayhem drop?

Leading the charge (pardon the pun) is the addition of a brand-new weapon: the spear. Unlike traditional tools, this weapon is purpose-built for mobility and mounted combat. Think a lance, rather than some primitive javelin. Crafted in the usual material tiers, copper through netherite, it offers both a quick jab for players on foot and a devastating charge attack when used while riding a horse or other ridable creature. The latter even scales damage based on speed, allowing fast-moving players to knock enemies clean off their own mounts.

We’re already imagining creating jousting tournaments in Minecraft with players using their favorite mount to ride to victory.

Speaking of mounts, the update finally gives players new ways to travel in overground and underwater biomes. Zombie horses (previously only obtainable through commands) will now spawn naturally in plains and savannah biomes, complete with zombie riders. If players kill the rider without harming the steed, they’ll be able to tame and ride their very own undead companion. Provided they don’t let it burn in daylight: Zombie horses have the same weakness of their regular zombie counterparts.

Beneath the waves, a brand-new aquatic mount called the Nautilus will allow players to glide through oceans without consuming oxygen. Tamed using pufferfish and customizable with saddle and armor upgrades, this is one of the coolest new features we’ve seen in years. Imagine taking on an Ocean monument with your spear and nautilus!

A zombified variant of the nautilus will also patrol the seas, often accompanied by drowned wielding tridents.

New Mounts of Mayhem Features

  • New Spear weapon with full material tiers
  • Jab attack on foot
  • Charge attack when mounted, scaling damage with speed and knocking enemies off mounts
  • Naturally spawning zombie horses with zombie riders in plains and savannah biomes
  • Ability to tame zombie horses if the rider is killed
  • Zombie horses burn in sunlight, requiring shelter
  • New Nautilus underwater mount, tameable with pufferfish
  • Riding a nautilus prevents oxygen loss underwater
  • Saddles and armor can be equipped on nautiluses
  • Zombie nautilus hostile variant
  • Drowned riding zombie nautiluses, sometimes wielding tridents

Minecraft’s fourth drop of a content-rich 2025

What’s striking is how this update fits into Mojang’s evolving content strategy. After years of relying on the annual Mob Vote to determine a single creature, Mojang scrapped the fan poll format in response to criticism that it forced players to choose between good ideas rather than receive them all.

With that pressure lifted, the studio has leaned into a more flexible model built around themed “Game drops” rather than massive all-or-nothing updates. Mounts of Mayhem will be the fourth such drop released this year. And that means faster, more focused content releases.

Mounts of Mayhem continues that trajectory, not as a bloated overhaul but as a concentrated strike on a small but overlooked part of the game: Mounts, horses, saddling up, charging into battle. Mojang may have retired the mob vote, but in its place we’re getting more far content.
