Spectre Divide: All we know about shroud-approved FPS game

Spectre Divide is a Michael “shroud” Grzesiek-approved shooter that redefines combat with its groundbreaking duality feature.

Spectre Divide is a 3v3 shooter by Mountaintop that has been under development for four years, with shroud joining the team in 2023 to provide gameplay input. However, he has embraced the game so enthusiastically that he’s even titled his preview videos “I’m launching a new game.” The preview showcases a cut-throat shooter that looks like a cross of cel-shaded Counter-Strike and Valorant. Two teams of three players are placed on a map within a city called Breakwater. The team to reach eight wins first in a bomb defusal setting takes the victory. The map will initially have four cel-shaded maps with two bomb sites.

It’s a simple objective-based shooter, but the added spice comes from duality.

What is duality in Spectre Divide?

Duality is a mechanic that lets you control two player models at once. Both share the same mind, but their body is different. This means the damage inflicted on one doesn’t register on another.

This opens up exciting possibilities for gameplay. Players can reach odd angles, cover longer distances, and be at two places at once with duality. Leave a spectre to hold down a bomb site while you sneak off to secure another area. When things get hairy, just summon a spectre with the puck device.

While it may sound overpowered, there’s an equal risk involved with the concept of duality. For example, if one leaves their Spectre at a site, it won’t be able to defend itself unless they teleport into the other body. This means if a clone is in a pinch, teleporting can be an extremely risky move.

Thankfully, an idle clone will alert players of danger nearby, which can help them strategize. Think of it like Killjoy’s alarmbot in Valorant, which detects enemies and alerts the squad of danger. Except in Spectre Divide, players can actually take control of the bot and do something about it.

Spectre Divide abilities and sponsors

Spectre Divide has a total of eight sponsors that players can pick as their abilities.

Instead of hero-specific abilities, Spectre Divide has a set of tools that players can pick based on their roles. They can’t customize their abilities since they are pre-decided by “sponsors.” These sponsors include abilities like healing, smoke grenades, invisibility walls, fire-rate boosts, and more.

For example, Ryker Industries includes an Arc Sentry that slows enemies within its line of sight. This may help the entry fragger to gain ground comfortably with added support. Morrgen United, on the other hand, has a damage-dealing fluid in Meltdown and a sight-blocking smoke in Smoke Shift.

While abilities are pre-decided, players can pick their loadout, which also comes in pairs of one weapon for each Spectre. If one Spectre dies, the lost weapon can be repurchased at a discount.

Similar to other FPS games, players may get a refund for a wrong purchase or request a weapon from a teammate.

Spectre Divide system requirements

Spectre Divide isn’t too demanding and can be played on computers that can comfortably run CS2 or Valorant.

Here are the minimum system requirements to play Spectre Divide:

Since it’s a cel-shaded FPS, there’s not a lot of realistic visual clutter, which may make it easy on any low-grade machines.

Spectre Divide doesn’t have a release date yet, but it was in an exclusive testing phase recently. Since the game looks well-polished in the trailer, it’s safe to say that a closed beta is coming soon. Currently, there’s an option to request access to the closed beta on Steam, but it doesn’t guarantee an entry. Still, it’s worth shooting one’s shot to book a slot for whenever the next testing phase goes live.
