T1, player agencies begin legal action against harassment and cyberbullying

T1 and their players are regularly the target of harassment, to a greater degree and frequency than most teams. As a result, the team and the agencies representing the roster have just launched legal actions and issued public statements against the cyberbullying they face.

A history of harassment against T1 and their players

As the most popular team in the world, T1 attracts a massive number of fans as well as other kinds of followers. With the highest expectations placed on them, the team is always under scrutiny. Some people in the community take their results far too seriously and express their unhappiness in angry or even illegal ways.

After losses by the team, some people famously happen to send trucks to the T1 headquarters, to display negative comments against the org or its players. The abuse against the players took all sorts of forms over the years.

• Sending funeral wreaths to players, as well as other forms of death threats to them or their families.
• Spamming social media or YouTube comments with negative messages.
• Conspiracy theories against various players, attempts to pressure the organization.
• General acts of harassing comments online.
• Other breaches of privacy.

Viewers particularly targeted back-to-back-to-back Worlds winner Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong over the course of his long career on T1. There even is an online community targeting him in particular, the “T1 Support Minor Gallery”, coordinating cyberbullying against him. After he left for Hanwha Life Esports, those harassers kept going and followed him there.

At the same time, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok has been a prime target as well. Having by far the most fans in the world, he likely also has the most haters. As Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk was found guilty of tax evasion, those viewers attempted to link him to that controversy.

T1 and the agencies take legal actions against the harassment

The team and the agencies representing the players started posting statements against this cyberbullying. The website for Fanable, the agency representing Faker and Gumayusi, now has a display on its landing page announcing that they’ve started taking legal action. Simultaneously, T1 posted a similar message on their socials.

These parties as well as Oner’s agency Key Player Agency have filed complaints against these actors. The agencies are currently pursuing both civil and criminal legal proceedings against the harassers.

T1 also put up a reporting page on their website to gain more awareness about online bullying. The organization stated that they would start legal proceedings over the serious offenses.
