The MongolZ is the most consistent team in Counter-Strike. Though it’s not a team that takes home championships, it has made it to the playoffs in almost every tournament it has played in. That’s a scary prospect in a 2-1 group stage match for FaZe Clan; can they pull off the upset?

Fans who tuned in to watch FaZe Clan during the second stage of the major had plenty of reason to doubt FaZe Clan. The team had to dig deep to fight its way into Stage 3 and were handed clean losses by the likes of Legacy and 3DMAX.

In those matches, Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyljev looked like a dud; a scary prospect after IEM Dallas. Though he let fans catch some glimpses of his past greatness, he was mostly unremarkable. In fact, in those losses he had a combined 25-36 K/D. Instead, it’s been David “frozen” Čerňanský who has been the team’s top star and most consistent performer to this point in the major.

Despite the claims in Twitch chat that s1mple was cooked and desk analysts saying that FaZe wouldn’t be able to hack it in Stage 3, the team now has a 2-1 record. That’s still owed in large part to one player on the team fragging out, whether it’s s1mple or Håvard “rain” Nygaard, but it’s a formula that can translate to success against cemented elites like MOUZ and white hot upstarts like Legacy.

The MongolZ fall into the latter category, though. The top Asian team has looked strong across its best-of-ones, with Garidmagnai “bLitz” Byambasuren operating at an extremely high level while still shot-calling for the team.

While FaZe Clan should be able to make this a much closer match than many would’ve expected five days ago, this is still The MongolZ’s game to lose.
