League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) has managed to win fans not only in South Korea but around the whole world. Exciting games and heated competitions have kept the fans watching all the time throughout the season. At the same time, the league has managed to appeal to new fans who come from different parts of the world and who adapt to changes in broadcasting format.

This season brought about a lot of successes for the LCK. However, what made the league get more viewers and increase its fan base worldwide?

LCK viewership reaches record numbers in 2026

As per the latest report from Riot Games, the 2026 season of LCK started on April 1 and concluded on September 13, with the Grand Finals being played between the teams of Gen.G and Hanwha Life Esports.

The number of Average Minutes Audience for this league is 714,000, which is a 13% increase compared to last year. It is also the first time that LCK achieved an AMA above 700,000. In 2021, when the league implemented franchising, the AMA number was 326,000.

The Grand Finals of 2026 have shown improvements over the last year in the number of viewers. The game was played by the same teams as the previous year, but it had 24% more peak concurrent viewers than in 2025. This dramatic spike suggests that fans were far more emotionally invested in the narrative payoff of the season rather than suffering from matchup fatigue.

The increase can be attributed to the number of worldwide viewers. The LCK’s international AMA increased by 20% compared to last year. The audience from abroad accounts for a large percentage of approximately 500,000 viewers among a total of 714,000 viewers, making its proportion 70%.

Broadcasting changes and competition format drive growth

The 2026 season saw significant changes in the broadcasting system of the LCK league. Naver CHZZK and SOOP acquired exclusive rights for broadcasting for the next five years, leaving previous broadcasting methods such as YouTube.

Investment was made in co-streaming, and top LoL streamers were provided more chances to broadcast matches. It allowed the league to sustain its viewership in spite of the changes in broadcasting platforms.

The structure of the competition has also contributed to keeping fans engaged. Starting in 2025, the LCK began crowning a single champion per year, giving fans a unified, season-long storyline to follow. Rivalries in the regular season garnered more than a million AMA. Grouping the teams for Rounds 3 and 4 made games between strong teams even more thrilling. This restructuring effectively eliminated low-stakes “filler” games, forcing elite teams to face off repeatedly in grueling, high-octane series that kept baseline viewership elevated week after week.

Competitions such as Road to MSI, LCK Play-In, and LCK Playoffs offered fans additional opportunities to be entertained. Furthermore, the LCK expanded its fan base in Asia with tournaments like the LCK Cup in Hong Kong and Kiwoom DRX’s tour in Vietnam. These targeted regional events strategically capitalized on adjacent Southeast Asian markets, converting local fans into long-term LCK followers where regional domestic leagues may lack world-class star power.

LCK Commissioner Lee Jeong-hoon credited the achievement to fans’ continued support and said the league would work with its ten teams to build a global esports product that appeals to different generations.

The LCK’s average audience has more than doubled since 2021, with international viewers accounting for over 70% of its 2026 AMA. Its next challenge is to turn this global interest into lasting engagement.
