League of Legends lane swaps explained and why they work

League of Legends doesn’t always need a patch to shake up the meta, and the rise of lane swaps is the perfect example.

Lane swapping is when players switch the lane they’re playing in after the game has started. This isn’t just running mid and team fighting. It’s a calculated move that pros often use after they’ve reached a certain point in the laning phase. Normally, this involves the bot lane, ADC and support, swapping with the top lane. 

This tactic can give a team early advantages and dominance, which helps snowball the game to their advantage.

How lane swaps work in League of Legends 

Lane swapping is most effective when you have one lane that’s winning and one lane that’s struggling. This can be because of a lot of early ganks or just because of an unfavorable matchup. 

For example, let’s say a team’s top laner is clearly winning their lane. That’s generally going to mean that the enemy top laner is behind. In many cases, even a bot lane that’s behind can kill that enemy top laner. Even if the bottom laners are weak, there are still two of them and they’re generally ranged while top laners are melee. If they can’t kill the enemy laner, the ADC can farm minions much easier against a melee top lane Champion.

Even when the enemy bottom lane is ahead, a top laner can play safely under the tower in most situations. This is especially true once they build some armor items. Plus, a quick gank from the jungler helps shut down the bottom lane, who’s is squishy and easy to kill. In both lanes, this is generally a win-win. 

Lane swapping can also be beneficial when there are objectives to take. In the same situation, it’d be very easy for the team to take Dragon or Rift Herald if the bottom lane was the strong lane. Besides that, it’s a great tactic for shutting down enemies that may be getting too far ahead. Lane swaps can take confident enemies down a peg and make them play more carefully. 

Because of the common Champions played in the bottom and top lanes, it’s most common to lane swap between these two lanes. However, it’s not impossible to lane swap with the middle lane. The only lane that should never swap is the jungle.
