Disguised keeps their spot in the LCS for 2027

The LCS 2027 promotion tournament has just concluded. After beating Maryville University 3-0, Disguised retains their spot in North America’s tier 1 league for one more year. MU managed to beat them once, but DSG got their revenge in the grand final.

Disguised keeps their spot in the LCS for 2027

The LCS runs with seven franchised teams joined by one guest team. At the end of each season, the guest team has to defend their spot in a promotion tournament. There, four other organisations compete with them, and the winner takes the guest spot for the next year. The teams to face them are the top two teams of the NACL and the LRN, the respective tier 2 leagues for North America and Latin America North.

This system has been in place since the dreaded introduction of the LTA. Disguised earned the guest slot, and they’ve held onto it so far. However, their road through this tournament has been more rocky this year.

Maryville University scored the first ever Collegiate vs LCS victory

Participating in the LCS promotion tournament were most notably Maryville University, and Cupid Esports who just played in the World Star Challenger Invitational. MU is one of the best collegiate teams, scoring a top two four times in a row in the collegiate league. At the same time, they’re playing in the NA Challenger League.

Entering the promotion tournament, they stomped Zeu5 Esports before going up against Disguised. Against all expectations, they convincingly took out DSG. This was the first ever victory by a collegiate team against an LCS opponent at a Riot-sanctioned event.

As they then also swept Cupid Esports, a collegiate team was a single match away from reaching the LCS. What would have been a great story for homegrown talent also included the side plot of Bilal “Crimson” Shoura. Brother to Rayan “Sniper” Shoura and Omran “V1per” Shoura, he would have been the third sibling to play top lane in the LCS.

However, DSG showed up revitalized in their rematch against MU. The grand final went the way everyone originally expected their first match-up to go. DSG beat MU 3-0 and will keep playing in the LCS in 2027 after nine straight wins. Share your thoughts on our forums.
