New players can be overwhelmed with information, so this Dota 2 ranks explained article will show you how it all works. The ranking system is actually a reflection of your skills in the game. Old-school players will remember that we only had MMR back in the day, but the situation is different now. Nowadays, Dota 2’s ranking system is much more complex, so let’s dive deep and learn everything.

Dota 2 Ranks Explained

The easiest way to explain Dota 2 ranks is that they represent a given person’s skill level when playing ranked games. The idea behind these ranks is to group people of similar skill levels, so they have a fairer matchmaking experience. Every single ranked match that you play will give you MMR, and this will increase your rank. Losing games, on the other hand, will cause you to lose MMR and drop in rank. More about it in a bit.

Number of Ranks in Dota 2

The current Dota 2 ranking system has eight tiers as follows:

• Herland (I-V)
• Guardian (I-V)
• Crusader (I-V)
• Archon (I-V)
• Legend (I-V)
• Ancient (I-V)
• Divine (I-V)
• Immortal (I-V)

Each of these tiers is split into five levels, shown with Roman numerals (the Immortal rank is the only exception). The first level is “I” and you need to reach “V” before advancing to the next one. For example, if you are placed as a Crusader III, you need to reach Crusader V and then unlock Archon I. The good news is that Valve lets you track your progress in your profile, so you know exactly how much you need for the next rank. It is important to know that most people who don’t know what Dota 2 is and are getting started will be placed in the lower ranks. Most Dota 2 players you will come across will be between Archon and Legend. Once you start progressing, you will notice a longer waiting time to find games.

The Immortal Dota 2 Rank

As mentioned, Immortal is the only Dota 2 rank that does not have any levels. This is the highest rank in the game, and once you hit it, your MMR will increase without unlocking any new levels. Instead, you will be placed on a live regional leaderboard, where you can see your current spot.

What is Dota 2 MMR?

We’ve used the word MMR several times now and it stands for matchmaking rating. It is a number that represents your skill level in ranked games and determines your rank. Unlike the medals, however, you are the only one who can check your MMR. Every single ranked game affects your MMR, so it goes up if you win and then goes down if you lose. What’s interesting is how it determines how much you win and lose. Generally speaking, you will gain 25 MMR when winning and 25 when losing. It is important to know that your MMR is NOT based on how you have performed in the specific game. In other words, you can have a KDA of 20/0 or 0/20 and if you win, you will gain the same MMR.  Keep in mind that all of this is true if your Rank Confidence and Glicko are on point. But what are those things exactly? Let’s find out.

Rank Confidence and Glicko

When looking for Dota 2 ranks explained content, you will often find these two things: Rank Confidence and Glicko. The first one is a percentage that tracks how confident the system is that your MMR is accurate to your skill level.  The Glicko system helps the matchmaker place you into games that are more balanced. If you are new to the game, you will see that your rank confidence is 0%, and as you play, it increases.  Having lower Dota 2 rank confidence means that every win or loss will usually result in gaining or losing more MMR. From our experience, you will be calibrated once the Rank Confidence reaches at least 30%. If it ever drops below that, you will be uncalibrated and your MMR will be hidden.

Dota 2 Rank Decay – Is it a Thing?

Yes, the Dota 2 rank decay is a thing, but it does not affect your MMR. Instead, the game will slowly decrease your rank confidence. If it drops below 30%, you will be uncalibrated and will have to play enough games to bring it back above 30%. The new rank will depend on how well you performed in these matches.

How to Gain MMR in Dota 2

Gaining MMR in Dota 2 is easier said than done, as you get around 25 MMR per win. The process can be very slow, especially when you are starting, so here are a few steps to follow:

• Choose a role and stick to it.
• Keep track of the meta and use the best heroes possible.
• Try to avoid reducing your behavior score because it will lead ot more toxic games.

Dota 2 is very complex and requires a mixture of skills to be successful. Aside from knowing all Dota 2 terms, you also have to keep playing a lot. That’s why you can often find people who’ve been playing for years and still have a low rank.
