Beyond the gameplay and esports scene, people should also be aware of Dota 2-specific terminology. Learning specific terms can help you navigate some situations more easily, no matter if you want to bet on Dota 2, play, or watch live matches. Let’s take a look at them.

A
- Aggro – This is the term that people use when a creep, enemy, or a tower starts attacking your hero. Aggroing an enemy can be used to try to pull the creep wave towards you.
- Aegis – This is used for the Aegis of Immortality that drops from killing Roshan. It is an item that will give you a second life after dying.
- AoE – Those of you who know what Dota 2 is and how it works will hear AoE a lot. It stands for Area of Effect, and it’s used for any ability that does not target a single unit.

- Backdoor – When you try to destroy towers and buildings without having your creep wage.
- Blocking a Camp – Dota 2 allows people to stack neutral camps when they attack them at a certain time. Blocking that camp means that someone has made it impossible for it to be stacked.
- Buyback – When you die, you can spend gold to buy back from the dead and help your team again.

- CS – After learning about the Dota 2 roles, you’ll see that cores have to focus on having more CS. This stands for creep stats and it shows how many last hits you have.
- Cannon Wave – This is the creep wave where you will have a cannon.
D
- DD – Short for Double Damage.
- Deny – When you kill an allied creep when it has low HP, you are denying it. This means the opponent can’t get gold and gets less experience.
- Dieback – This Dota 2 terminology shows the situation where someone has used Buy Back and died shortly after that.

- Easy Lane – AKA Safe Lane, this is the Bot lane for Radiant and Top for Dire.
F
- Farming – The act of killing creeps.
- Feeding – When an allied hero dies too many times, he grants more gold and experience to the enemy squad.
- FF – Short for Forfeit, players usually use it when they give up.

- Gank – Used when one or more heroes are attempting to kill someone on another lane.
- GPM – Short for Gold per Minute

- KotL – Short for Keeper of the Light, one of the Dota 2 heroes.
L
- Last Hit – Whether you want to bet on Dota 2, play, or watch, you will hear this a lot. It’s used when you get the final strike on an enemy creep or hero and you get the bonus gold.
M
- Micro – Used to describe a given player’s individual skill.
- Megas – Used when all of the enemy’s barracks are destroyed and the other team has Mega Creeps.
N
- Net Worth – The total gold a given hero has accumulated so far.
O
- OoM – This is short for “out of mana” and you can hear it on all Dota 2 ranks. People usually use it in a situation where they have to do something but cannot because of the lack of mana.
- Orb walking – The ability to basically stutter step while attacking, usually used for heroes like Drow Ranger and Windranger.
P
- Proc – The short for a mechanic that activates when something happens.
- PUB – Short for publicly playing games (everything apart from a professional Dota 2 match).

- Kite – One of the common Dota 2 terminologies used when attacking an enemy hero while staying out of his range.
R
- Ratting – The process where one or more heroes are trying to push a lane while the opponents are focusing on other parts of the map.
- Rax – This means barracks.
- Rapier – Short for Divine Rapier, one of the most powerful items in the game.
S
- Shee Stick – Used for the Scythe of Vyse, also called Hex.
- Snowballing – A Dota 2 term that people use when a hero gains a significant advantage over others.
- Stack – When a neutral camp has more than one pair of creeps, it is stacked.
T
- TP – Short for Teleport.
- True Sight – The ability in Dota 2 to see invisible units.
W
- Wards – Used for the two wards in the game that give vision and True Sight.
Z
- Zoning – The ability to harass (attack) enemies in such a way that prevents them from accessing a specific area. Usually used during the laning stage.
- Zoo – Used when a given hero has multiple control units (usually used for Beastmaster).
