Early group stage highlights of Esports World Cup 2026 CS2
The opening days of the group stage already gave some top-tier drama across the matches.
JiJieHao dominates Team Spirit
In the opening round of the tournament, underdog squad JiJieHao defeated one of the big dogs, Team Spirit, in a tight best-of-one opener.
Spirit was forced into an immediate lower-bracket survival run, where they rebounded with a 2-0 sweep over Luminosity to stay alive.
Team Falcons and FaZe secure early playoff spots
Reigning Major champions Team Falcons continued their dominant form in Group B, defeating K27 and securing a swift 2-0 victory over Astralis to book their ticket straight into the 16-team playoff bracket.
FaZe Clan, on the other hand, eased past BetBoom Team and swept Legacy 2-0 to guarantee their own playoff slot.
G2 Esports and GamerLegion advance
G2 Esports secured early playoff qualification through their upper-bracket path by outclassing M80 and earning a hard-fought 2-1 win over BIG.
GamerLegion similarly marched forward by defeating Luminosity and JiJieHao. After this defeat, Luminosity lost to Spirit in the LB quarter-finals, ending their EWC 2026 run.
Tournament format and remaining playoff contenders
The group stage divides the 32 teams into four double-elimination brackets of eight teams. The top four teams from each group advance into a 16-team single-elimination playoff bracket:
- Qualified playoff teams (so far): Team Falcons, FaZe Clan, G2 Esports, and GamerLegion are among the first squads to lock in guaranteed playoff spots.
- Contenders battling through upper and lower brackets: Heavyweight favorites including Team Vitality, Natus Vincere (NAVI), MOUZ, The MongolZ, FURIA, and Aurora Gaming are actively fighting through upper semifinals and lower-bracket deciders to claim the remaining playoff seeds.
As lower-bracket deciders wrap up on August 16, sixteen teams will move forward into the single-elimination playoffs, where a single misplay will result in the end of the path for any team.
