Gen.G vs LYON: Can the LCS reach the LoL Worlds semifinal?

Gen.G vs LYON promises to be the most one-sided best-of-five in LoL Esports since, well, the last time they faced at First Stand. However, it was at this very tournament that G2 Esports pulled off the great upset and beat the LCK champion. The Gen.G vs LYON LoL Worlds quarterfinal starts on October 4, at 11pm CET / 2pm PST. Obviously, the markets have Gen.G as the heavy favorite with no discussion.

Why the market favors Gen.G
Gen.G is the best team in the world. LYON is an LCS representative that came very close to losing 2-0 against a CBLOL opponent. Why Gen.G is the favorite is no question.
Instead, what’s interesting is looking at whether LYON actually has any chance to pull off the upset at all. First off in NA’s favor, the Worlds match between those two teams was actually not one-sided. LYON was able to put up a very good fight, winning the first game and starting up ahead in the third.
However, this is always how it goes with NA’s best team. They manage to show up, and ultimately fail to make it stick. In 2024, Kacper “Inspired” Słoma already went 2-3 against Gen.G with FlyQuest.
The next problem for Gen.G is their early Swiss Stage victory. Finishing 3-0, the LCK champion played their last game on October 25, a full ten days before their quarterfinal. LYON qualified on October 31, playing 11 games against Gen.G’s five.
Those two factors combined mean that the match-up wasn’t so set in stone to begin with, and that LYON will also arrive in better conditions. That being said, the Swiss Stage has definitely taken a toll on them, and they’re only getting three days to recover and prepare. Additionally, their First Stand match also took place. There, Gen.G destroyed LYON 3-0, looking more like how this match-up should go on paper. Stylistically speaking, there’s another problem as LYON wishes to face an opponent that doesn’t play cautiously enough. Gen.G instead has a very methodical playstyle while still being aggressive and proactive.
What traders are saying
Most people are commenting on the fact that Inspired finally failed to draw an easy team to advance off of. Others expect history to repeat itself and for Gen.G vs LYON to go 3-2 for the LCK. Nobody actually believes that the LCS can take this match.

Our Gen.G vs LYON prediction
Prediction: Gen.G to win
Gen.G is simply better all around. Bot and top lanes heavily favor LoL Worlds’ favorite region, and the mid lane should present the same issue. Except that both mid laners in this match are highly inconsistent at LoL Worlds. A victory for LYON would be as historic as it is unlikely.
