After a long wait, League of Legends’ new champion is about to make her in-game debut. Are you ready to break into the spirit realm?

Riot last released the champion Smolder the Fiery Fledgling back in January of 2024. Usually, champion drops occur every few months. This is the longest wait between champions in years, coming in at just under six months. Perhaps most interestingly, Riot developers decided to go back through the lore to pull out a character.

Here’s what players need to know about League’s new champion ahead of her official in-game release.

Who is League of Legends’ new champion?

Aurora is the newest playable champion in League of Legends, arriving on July 17 with the 14.14 patch update.

Announced in mid-June, Aurora is a freckled, bunny-eared “Witch between Worlds” who can travel to and from the spirit world. Devs explained that Aurora was originally developed six years ago but ended up splintering into other champions like Sylas and Spirit Blossom.

Notably, Aurora is a vastaya, a race of enlightened humans who took power from the spirit realm. Other examples include the foxy Ahri, though Aurora is clearly rabbit-like, making her a part of the Bryni. While she was born Bryni rather than having transformed herself. She’s also special in that she can directly interact with spirits. Her people live in Freljord, unlike most vastaya.

A last point is that League of Legends’ new champion is a helpful witch who prefers to heal rather than hurt. Of course, breaking that rule is sometimes a necessity.

Aurora’s upcoming ability kit in LoL

As a helpful witch, Aurora’s moves align with healing and using her deep connection with the spiritual realm.

Aurora’s move set includes the following abilities.

  • Spirit Abjuration – exorcising enemy spirits that can heal her and grant movement
  • Two-fold Hex – a cursed missile that she can recast to come back to her, causing extra damage
  • Across the Veil – invisibility through the spirit realm
  • The Weirding – a blast of spirit magic from the spirit realm
  • Between Worlds – a shockwave followed by an area trap that allows her to transport across

As can be seen from her moves, Aurora will likely either be classed as a mage or a controller. However, developers could classify her differently to reflect actual gameplay.

League of Legends’ new champion is almost here, from frost and the spirit realm. Players who try her out are sure to share their opinions with the community.
