Vitality declines IEM Beijing 2026 invite amid apEX, mezii paternity leave

Team Vitality has clarified its decision to decline its invitation to IEM Beijing 2026. The choice to skip the $1.25 million tournament, scheduled to take place in China from November 2 to 8, came as a surprise. The organization, however, shared that family commitments and long-term Major preparation will be its main focus instead of a late-season LAN event.

The main reason behind Vitality’s withdrawal is the personal commitments of members of the main roster. Both in-game leader Dan “apEX” Madesclaire and rifler William “mezii” Merriman are taking paternity leave.

Because of this, apEX and mezii will each miss a separate upcoming event: BLAST Open Porto and PGL Masters Bucharest.

In its statement, Vitality reaffirmed that supporting their players during major personal events is a core value for the organization:

“Missing an IEM event, especially in a new city, is not a decision we take lightly, however, our number one priority is to ensure that our players feel supported to spend the time they need with their families during this unique moment in their lives.”

Protecting Major preparation and VRS points 

Beyond the well-being of its players, Vitality also mentioned another aspect for skipping the Chinese event. Rather than traveling to Beijing with temporary stand-ins and compromising their tactical synergy, the team prefers to maximize their preparation time with their full starting five.

With the PGL Singapore Major 2026 closing in with every passing day, Vitality is focusing all available practice windows on tournaments where the complete roster can compete together. 

Under the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) system, competing with a full lineup ensures the squad can collect maximum ranking points without risking point penalties associated with playing alongside substitutes.

In their official statement, they added, “Instead of attending IEM Beijing with a substitute IGL, which limits our practice time, we have opted to attend events where our full roster can be present.”

While Vitality and Team Spirit both declined their invites to the tournament, the IEM Beijing field still remains exceptionally stacked, featuring world-class squads like Team Falcons, MOUZ, Natus Vincere, and FaZe Clan vying for the title.
