PGL Wallachia Season 8 Group Stage preview and odds

While it feels like the last edition was just a few weeks ago (It’s already the middle of April?!), PGL Wallachia is on the cusp of returning, with PGL Wallachia Season 8 kicking off in just a few days.

Once again, the event is back with a million dollar prize pool and some of the best teams in the world, the same great format (we love long brackets) and primed for some amazing Dota 2.

But one major wrinkle: The spectre of visa issues. Once again, this event looks primed for some stand-ins, visa issues, and other surprises. We’ll give you the scoop on all of it, and get you ready to enjoy the tournament.

PGL Wallachia Season 8 Group Stage latest odds

Below we’ll post the current match-winner odds for PGL Wallachia Season 8. While we often suggest prop-bets and parlays for Dota 2 betting, these are the best way to get a general feel of who’s set up for success, and who’s destined for upset.

PGL Wallachia Season 8 details and format

April 18 is the kick-off date for PGL Wallachia Season 8. From April 18 until April 26, 16 teams from around the globe will battle for supremacy at the PGL Studio in Bucharest, Romania. This time, every single team was directly invited, seemingly based on past results. While this means no qualifiers, it has led to a highly competitive lineup.

The group stage uses the same modified swiss-system as Season 7, with the top eight teams seeded into playoffs. With this swiss system, if you win three matches you qualify. And all games are best-of-three.

Playoffs are double elimination, again best-of-three. Grand finals, as ever, are best-of-five.

PGL Wallachia Season 8 Teams

Once again, 16 teams are heading to Europe for PGL Wallachia. We’ll skip explaining whether each was invited or qualified here this time, because every single team had a direct invite.

  • BetBoom Team
  • GamerLegion
  • Heroic
  • MOUZ
  • Natus Vincere
  • PARIVISION
  • South American Rejects*
  • Team Falcons
  • Team Liquid
  • Team Spirit
  • Team Yandex
  • Tundra Esports
  • Vici Gaming

*paiN Gaming dropped their roster on April 12. The roster will attend playing under the South American Rejects banner.

Yet more visa issues and Stand-Ins for PGL Wallachia

We talked about it last edition, and sadly, not much has changed for Season 8, but multiple teams will be hit with the ‘stand-in’ curse, partially because of visa issues, but also due to other factors.

First up, Team Spirit, who will be without Magomed “Collapse” Khalilov, who will be replaced by Passion UA and Yellow Submarine’s Bohdan “Batyuk” Batiuk due to personal reasons. Batyuk also replaced Collapse during the Premier Series, although Team Spirit had little success there, being eliminated by Nigma Galaxy.

Similarly, Tundra Esports will once again be without Ivan “Pure” Moskalenko, at least for the start of the tournament. He’ll be replaced by Alik “V-Tune” Vorobey, currently a free agent, who was last with Virtus.pro’s academy team, VP.CIS.

No line-ups are officially confirmed yet either, so expect some other turmoil. Until then, stick with Jaxon.gg as we update.

Players to watch at PGL Wallachia Season 8

While there’s a plethora of talent set to compete at PGL Wallachia Season 8, we’ve listed some of the players you should keep an eye on during this crucial event.

  • While we talked about them in last season’s preview, we do want to draw attention again to Bozhidar “bzm” Bogdanov and Neta “33” Shapira, for Tundra. Pure’s out. So once again it’s on these all-stars to carry their team.
  • Statistically, Ammar “ATF” Al-Assaf is the only offlaner who consistently beats carries in-lane in farm. The numbers don’t lie: ATF is a player you rarely want to bet against. Unfortunately, Team Falcons haven’t been carrying their end of the deal. Maybe one for prop bets.
  • Egor “Nightfall” Grigorenko is the crux of Aurora Gaming’s dangerous lineup that has upset a lot of teams, especially in group stages. While the team doesn’t transition well to Playoffs, if you’re picking players for group stage parlays, we’d look at Nightfall all day.

PGL Wallachia Season 8 Betting Tips

At PGL Wallachia Season 8, early rounds see some pretty big matchup disparities. For instance, the first game for Aurora Gaming, versus South American Rejects, seems likely to be a big stomp. Same with Tundra versus Heroic.

Throughout the Group Stage, keep your eyes on these matchups which will grow increasingly rare as the days progress. That’s because the swiss system puts teams with the same record against each other.

As a result as the event moves forward through the stage, its best to look more at binary outcomes. We like enhancing and expanding our Parlay’s with high-yield elements such as Rune side spawn, Rune-type, and first bloods. Because each of these often have higher stakes, you can turn a simple win-loss parlay into something that can give a more substantial takeaway.
