All you need to know about Chicken pets in CS2

Valve recently shadow-dropped virtual pet chickens in the latest Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) update. Without writing a single word in the official patch notes, the developers added the feathered NPCs that have been roaming the maps since the original games into the game’s roster of digital cosmetics.

After the update, if you’re wondering how to hatch your own hen, keep it fed, or style it out, then here’s the full rundown on how the system works.

How to claim and hatch your chicken eggs in CS2?

You can’t buy or trade your chicken in Counter-Strike 2. Chicken Eggs drop exclusively through the Weekly Care Package for Prime Status accounts, after earning your first weekly rank-up.

However, choosing the egg from your weekly drops comes with a downside. Picking the egg consumes both of your weekly drop rewards, meaning you pass on weapon cases, skins, and spray graffitis for that week.

Once claimed, your egg sits in a nest on the main menu next to your agent. You don’t have to do anything manually to hatch it. It follows a fixed, real-time life cycle:

  • Egg: Hatches roughly one week after being claimed.
  • Chick: Lasts for 22 days. Rides on your agent’s shoulder in loadouts and hangs around the main menu but stays out of live matches.
  • Pullet: Lasts for 28 days. This is when your chick’s permanent breed and colors reveal themselves, and your pet begins following you into live servers.
  • Hen: Fully grown stage lasting 90 days before the pet peacefully retires from old age at 140 total days.

Breeds, feeding mechanics, and custom drip of chickens in CS2

Every egg hatches into a standard yellow chick before growing into one of three distinct breeds: Catalana (classic farm chicken), Silkie (fluffy, fur-like feathers), or Polish (featuring a tall feather crest). Across all breeds, there are 34 unique colorways and body builds.

To keep your pet from abandoning you, you have to feed it. “Chicken Feed” also drops via future Weekly Care Packages (costing both drop slots again). If your pet runs out of food, it literally packs its bags and leaves forever.

For cosmetics, players can name their pet once per growth stage, snap poses in an in-game photo booth complete with unlockable map backgrounds, filters, and mini hats (like wizard caps or party hats), and save memories inside a digital scrapbook called the HatchBook.

Since every pet item is account-bound, non-tradable, and non-marketable, your hen is purely about showing off commitment rather than a new trade market like the weapon skins.

What do CS2 players think about pet chickens?

Unsurprisingly, Counter-Strike players aren’t entirely sold on Valve turning chickens into companions.

On Reddit, plenty of players found the update, particularly because Valve added the system without mentioning it in the patch notes. The bigger sticking point, however, is how much maintaining a chicken costs in terms of Weekly Care Package rewards.

Both Chicken Eggs and Chicken Feed occupy both weekly reward slots, leading some players to argue that the system is effectively designed to make them give up cases and weapon drops in exchange for keeping an account-bound pet alive.

Others aren’t against chickens themselves, but question Valve’s priorities. With more serious issues like anti-cheat, hit registration, subtick and more, players feels that the devs should be prioritizing this instead of adding pet chickens.
