Dota 2 runes guide: All rune types, effects, and spawn times

The Dota 2 runes are one of the smallest in-game elements that can give players a huge advantage. A single rune can completely change the outcome in the laning stage or during a fight. That’s why this Dota 2 runes guide will show you everything you need to know about them.
Currently, Dota 2 has nine different runes. Seven of them are in the “Power Rune” group, and you also have Water Runes and Bounty Runes. Power Runes start spawning at 6:00 and then will appear once every two minutes. They will follow a cycle that prevents a specific Power Rune from reappearing until all of the others have been used. With that said, let’s learn everything about them.
Water Rune
Water runes are among the first river runes that players will come across. There are a total of four Water Runes in the game and the first pair spawns at exactly 2:00 (two minutes after the game starts). The second pair shows up at the four-minute mark.
Players who pick up this rune will get 40 HP and 80 mana. It may look modest, but the truth is that these runes can make a difference during the laning stage. They allow people to be more aggressive because you can use them to restore Bottle charges.
Bounty Rune
The next interesting rune players will find is the Bounty Rune, which is the so-called “economic rune” of Dota 2. Once used, it provides bonus gold to every hero on that team.
What’s interesting about the Bounty Runes is that they are the opening ones in Dota 2. They will spawn as soon as the game time starts (0:00), and initially, there will be four of them. After that, these runes will continue spawning at their dedicated jungle locations once every four minutes. However, you will only have two to four.
Amplify Damage Rune

Also known as the Double Damage Rune, the rune will increase a hero’s main attack damage by 80%. Furthermore, the rune will grant a 15% spell amplification and all of that lasts for 45 seconds.
This has to be one of the most important Dota 2 Power Runes in the game because of what it gives. The spell amp means that both casters and right-clickers can benefit from it.
The rune is ideal when you need to land a fast kill on Roshan, push towers or take part in big team fights. It’s one of those Dota 2 runes that can easily turn a fight around and we have seen that when Team Spirit won TI15, as well as in many other events.
Arcane Rune
This is a rune design mainly for spell casters because it reduces the cooldown of their ability by 25. Moreover, the rune lowers the mana cost of all abilities by 30% for 50 seconds. Because of how it works, it provides a dramatic increase in some heroes’ impact for a short window. Those who activate the rune should try to engage in a fight or take an objective right away.
Haste Rune
The Haste Rune gives 550 movement speed to a given hero for 22 seconds. It also prevents ordinary slow effects from reducing that hero’s movement speed below that.
If you get lucky with the Dota 2 rune timing and get this early on as a mid-laner, it allows you to land an easy gank. You can quickly relocate to one of the side lanes, land a kill and get back to your laning stage.
You can also watch live esports matches to see how professional players handle Rune picks-ups and rotations.
Illusion Rune
As its name suggests, the Illusion Rune will allow you to create two controllable illusions of a given hero that last 75 seconds. These illusions deal 35% of the hero’s original damage, but they also take more incoming damage.
Often underrated, it is one of the Dota 2 runes that does a lot. You can use it to push, scout, check Roshan, cut creep waves, or even force enemies to attack it.
Invisibility Rune
The next Dota 2 power rune you will find is the Invisibility rune and it will make a hero invisible for 45 seconds. What’s interesting about it is that it has a two-second fade time, during which you can use items/abilities without breaking the effect. After that, every action (casting, attacking, item usage) will break it.
Invisibility lets you escape dangerous situations or gank someone. Just be aware that True Sight will reveal the invisible hero.
Regeneration Rune
This has to be among the strongest runes in terms of resources because it regenerates 6% of the hero’s max HP/mana per second. It can last up to 30 seconds, and its effect will end once the hero has full HP and mana.
A properly used Regeneration Rune can allow heroes to make risky/aggressive plays. However, taking player-based damage will reduce the regen effect to 1% of maximum HP and mana, so keep that in mind.
Shield Rune
The Dota 2 Shield Rune is exceptionally strong because it gives you a damage barrier equal to 50% of the hero’s maximum HP. It lasts up to 75 seconds, and it can be decisive in the later stages of the game. Even though it is better for tankier heroes, it can also do wonders for some of the more fragile picks in the game. Some of the best Dota 2 players of all time have proved that many times.
Rune Control – Does it Really Matter?
Controlling the Dota 2 runes is very underrated, especially in pub games, but it can actually make a huge difference. Midlaners who do that will have a lot more opportunities and will also deny these opportunities to the opposing laner.
Overall, rune controlling is important as it gives you more opportunities. Knowing how and when to use a particular rune can often have a decisive impact on a team fight and ultimately – the game.
