As a Dota player for over 20 years who started playing when it was just a custom game on Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, there are definitely a few things I wish I knew earlier. Considering that Dota 2 has reached its highest player count since 2022, here are the top crucial tips for everyone coming back or those taking their first steps.

Don’t try to master every hero, master the fundamentals first

No one can deny that Dota 2 is complex and it’s probably one of the least beginner-friendly esports out there. With so many heroes, abilities, and items, players get overwhelmed when trying to master everything and often give up.

If someone were getting started right now, they should not try to master every hero. Personally, I used to switch heroes every game and thought that trying something new would fix the bad decisions I’d made before. Needless to say, that was a mistake, and one you should not be making.

Instead of playing with random heroes, focus on learning all of the fundamentals. Think of aspects like:

  • Last hitting
  • Positioning
  • Map awareness
  • Knowing when to fight
  • Understanding power spikes

All of these things matter, so when you learn more about them, you will be in a much better position than before. Once you have that knowledge, you can venture into new heroes and find something that works for you.

Your mental fame is as important as your mechanical skill in Dota 2

Mechanical skill is important, and finding the optimal keybinds, Dota 2 settings, movement and overall positioning are all crucial. However, your mental game is just as important as that, if not more.

When you start playing Dota 2, there is a good chance you will come across a lot of issues, such as:

  • Getting angry at a teammate
  • Losing focus after one bad fight
  • Playing while tilted
  • Arguing with opponents

All of these small things add up, and people who are not prepared to face them will find themselves in a really bad place. Dota 2 will eventually get to you if you don’t know how to deal with these issues, so focus on that first.

My experience has taught me that staying calm allows me to make better decisions. Being too emotional often leads to chasing kills, diving towers, fighting after losing a teamfight and typing instead of playing. All of those things are not doing you any favors.

Some useful habits can include taking breaks after losing streaks, muting toxic players early on and focusing on your own decisions. You can also tune into some live esports matches to improve your gameplay.

The map is more important than your hero

The last thing which every player should know from Day 1 is the importance of the Dota 2 map. Most beginners will make the same mistakes: looking only at their hero, farming without thinking, and ignoring missing enemies. Doing all of that may not seem problematic at first, but it always comes at a price.

The best way to solve this is to pay close attention to the mini map. Keep track of missing enemies, potential movements, rotations, and everything else. Every single change gives you some information you can use to your advantage.

Before you can make the most of that, however, you need to learn the concepts related to the map. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Vision
  • Wards
  • Smoke movements
  • Roshan control
  • High ground advantage
  • Objective timing

Think of Dota 2 as a game of chess disguised as an action game. There is way more going on than meets the eye and you must be aware of everything. Yes, it will take time and yes, it may be annoying, but once you understand the concept, you will be in a much better position than before.
