MLBB’s new ‘Armor Break’ rule solves esports’ biggest grand final dilemma—at a cost

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) has revealed a new Grand Final rule known as “Armor Breaks.” This rule can potentially extend a best-of-seven (BO7) into a longer match, giving the lower bracket winner a second chance to fight for the championship.
The new rule was announced for the MCT EA Grand Final, part of the MLBB Championship Tour East Asia. The match has three stages according to the announcement poster: the standard BO7 series, Armor Break, and the optional final called The Decider. Here are all the details below about how this new mechanism works.

The Grand Final begins with a BO7 series and it consists of matches between the two finalists, one from the upper bracket and the other one from the lower bracket. Usually, the team that wins four matches out of the total seven in the final series is announced the champion. However, the new Armor Break rule has changed the outcome of the match.
Now, the winner of the upper bracket has a chance to acquire “Immortality Armor”. This perk is unlocked by winning all the matches in the double-elimination brackets. If the team holding the Immortality Armor wins four games in the BO7 series, they immediately win the tournament.
However, if the lower bracket winner manages to score four victories first, they are able to break the Immortality Armor of their opponent.

What happens when Armor Break is activated?
Once the armor breaks, the series continues rather than restarting. The Grand Final moves into an extended phase, in which both teams again compete for the trophy.
Irrespective of previous scores, both teams need to secure one additional victory after Armor Break to win the competition. This grants the upper-bracket team a chance to recover, while giving the lower-bracket team a path to complete the comeback. This rule preserves the upper-bracket winner’s advantage while giving the lower-bracket winner a fair shot at the title.
This rule keeps the upper-bracket winner’s advantage while giving the lower-bracket winner another chance to win the title.
How does BO9 scoring work

If the lower-bracket team reaches four map wins first, the Armor Break rule effectively turns a BO7 Grand Final into a BO9 series. In case of a 4-4 tie after the Armor Break, both teams will have to play The Decider map to determine the winning side. However, the entire scoring system was not stated in the official announcement.
The extended format will have wide reaching impacts for MLBB betting as well, particularly for markets such as correct score or total maps.
What does Armor Break mean for MLBB esports?
Altogether, “Armor Break” is actually a clever broadcast-first innovation. Because, at one hand, it places an intense psychological and draft burden on players during a full BO9 stretch; however, it also solves a decade-long esports debate by keeping the Upper Bracket advantage meaningful without ruining the match’s competitive momentum for fans.
If this becomes successful in MCT EA, we can expect this format to be refined and potentially trialed in larger premier leagues like MPL.
Nonetheless, the addition of the Armor Break will also impact esports betting odds, as it adds another layer for analysts to track.
