Swiss Stage Day 6 Preview: HLE Heavy Favourites vs FLY

We are getting closer to the end of the Swiss Stage, and every game is now a make-or-break Bo3 series. The pressure will be starting to set in for each team now.

Each team will play over three days. On the first day, we have the teams with a 2-1 record: TES, DK, HLE, and FLY. This page will preview the day ahead, discussing how each team has fared and what we expect from their upcoming series.

Game  1 – TES VS DK

The day’s first game sees the LPL’s number two seed take on the LCK’s third seed. Both teams have quietly been having a good tournament so far. DK went 2-0 but was beaten by LNG. TES have put in good performances and only lost to tournament favourites GEN.

The Teams

Last time out, TES faced FNC. The match has become a grudge between the fans, as FNC always seeks revenge on TES. This means the game is often played with emotion, but TES was controlled and did not let outside factors affect them. Watching the match back, you can see how they outplayed FNC throughout and showed their quality. Each member of TES played their role to significant effect. In particular, Jungler Tian and Mid-Laner Creme were instrumental. If Creme is allowed on an AD champion as he was with the Yone pick, he is known to be one of the best. In this game, he is going up against Showmaker, who has been at the centre of everything good for DK. Showmaker is more of an AP Mage player, so it will be a fascinating battle to watch.

Previously 2-0, DK could have progressed straight through to knockouts. LNG defeated them, who were not expected to perform so well. DK has been in good form, taking controlled wins over FNC and FLY. It has been a relatively clean tournament for them so far. The aim will be for that to continue here and for them to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat inflicted by LNG. It will once again be Showmaker and Aiming that will be looked to for the big performances. I also expect Top Laner Kingen to put in an outstanding performance.

Betting On TES VS DK

TES are firm favourites coming into this series. They are currently on GG.Bet the odds for a TES win are 5/14. Meanwhile, a DK win is 19/10. (Odds subject to change.) TES has performed at a slightly higher level than DK, so TES being the favourite is not a big surprise. I would by no means count DK out, though, as this is a strong roster, and they have shown in the past that even as underdogs, they can win.

Game 2 – HLE VS FLY

In our second game of the day, we see LCK’s number one seed take on the number one seed from the LCS. This straightforward series for HLE should ensure they play on the knockout stage.

The Teams

HLE is coming into this match after losing a thrilling Bo3 series to GEN. It was a close series, and HLE lost 2-1 in a fantastic rematch of the LCK season finals. Their confidence will not be low, as beating GEN has always been challenging. Up against FLY, they will be firm favourites as there is just a significant skill gap between these regions. Jungler Peanut, who is only missing a Worlds title in his career, will be determined to make this a clean 2-0 series. HLE will likely play through mid-laner Zika, who has been performing exceptionally at Worlds. ADC Viper has also been performing at a high level. If they can get him ahead early, he will have no issues down in the bot lane, along with support player Delight.

FLY has experienced a relatively successful Worlds so far. Being 2-1 at this stage is better than most expected. They have had a more favourable draw than their fellow LCS, TL or LEC teams, FNC and G2. In their previous game, they overcame PSG with little to no trouble. The game always looked to be in their own hands. HLE will prove to be much more formidable opposition here. The series being a Bo3 makes it hard to see a FLY victory. They could take a game if they put in a brave and measured performance. But it is doubtful they will take the series. Top-Laner Bwipo will be their best avenue to play through. He is experienced at this stage and has proved his quality against tough opposition. Going against Doran will be challenging, but if he can get slight advantages in the lane, he could positively influence other parts of the map.

Betting On HLE VS FLY

As expected, HLE is a solid favourite for this series. HLE has odds of 1/50 on GG.Bet to win the series, whilst a FLY win has odds of 9/1. (Odds subject to change.) It is hard to say whether any bet is safe. Looking at the odds,  HLE win is the safest bet we have seen in the tournament.

Final Thoughts

Two teams will advance to the knockout stage on this day. The pressure will be high, as the stakes are already high. It is not the end of the road for the losing teams, as they will have another chance to qualify in the 2-2 games. The TES and DK series is a competitive match between two LoL heavyweights. The results of this day will have a massive impact on the teams below, which will face the possibility of being up against the losing teams from here.
