Game 1 – G2 VS HLE

These two teams had two of the easier day-one games. Playing against opposition ranked much lower than themselves, and they could make light work of day one.

G2 played against PNG on day one and dominated the game from start to finish. They also drafted a team comp that they might not have expected. But this could have been a tactical decision with future games in mind. G2 knew they had the quality to beat PNG, so utilising exotic picks we did not expect now creates doubts in other teams’ minds and drafts. Teams will be worried and thinking, what if G2 pulls an expected pick out? Yike carried the early game and did so using an AP Jungler. We have not seen this much at Worlds, as picks such as Skarner and Maokai have been prioritised. Seeing the synergy between Yike and Caps for this draft will be good.

Just as G2 did, HLE also dominated their game from start to finish. The team performed; Doran, Zeka, and Viper were all in top form. The three of them got all the kills precisely where you want them to go. Peanut and Delight’s flawless playmaking allowed the other three members to take hold of the game. Overall, it was a fantastic team performance.

Betting Tip

Coming into this, it will be predicted to be a close game. Ultimately, HLE will be a slight favourite as the skill gap between LCK and LEC is obvious. G2 should not be fully counted out, as it is only a Bo1, and they can put in a performance to cause issues for HLE.

Game 2 – DK VS FLY

On day one, both teams faced different levels of competition. The LCS first seed, FLY, faced a Play-Ins team, while DK faced tougher opposition in LEC number two seed FNC.

Day one was predicted to be challenging for DK. When any team plays against FNC, you never know how the game will play out. To their credit, they controlled large parts of the game. Letting a lead slip at one point was not good, but they remained patient, waited for an opportunity, and soon recovered. They will not want that to happen again here. Showmaker was instrumental in their opening-day win, and he will be the player to watch coming into this game. If FLY does not lock him down, he will control the map.

FLY had a relatively more straightforward time on day one up against GAM. They were in the driving seat throughout and played a tidy game. The game finished with only nine kills – eight in favour of FLY. This shows the level of control they had throughout. They avoided making mistakes and waited for the right moments before taking any fights. Massu was a massive contributor, with 100% KP (Kill Participation). He could sit at the back and deal damage without being in danger.

Betting Tip

Looking at the betting odds, DK is a heavy favourite to win this match. On GG.Bet, DK has odds of 1/4, compared to odds of 13/5 for FLY. (Odds are subject to change.) DK is the safe bet for this match; their quality should be too much for FLY.

Game 3 – GEN VS TES

This looks set to be the game of the day. The LCK second seed and favourite to win Worlds this year, up against the second seed from the LPL. It promises to be a thrilling game in terms of tactics and gameplay.

GEN is one of the favourites to win the tournament. They performed exceptionally on day one, beating tough opposition WBG. Performances from Chovy and Peyz were crucial to their success in this game, as was Lehends on the Renata pick. He provided excellent support to keep these carry champions safe and perfectly disengaged when needed. They played a slightly off-meta draft, where the champions they picked have been nerfed recently. But this GEN team knew they could get the most out of champions and executed them effortlessly.

TES had a daunting task on day one, facing the current holders of the Worlds trophy. In the early game, it did not look promising for TES as they were pegged back by T1. But as the game went on, it went back and forth, and it was an even game right up until the end. TES were the better team for team fights and found advantages through ADC Jackeylove; an early game quadra-kill only accelerated his strength and was the difference maker in this game.

Betting Tip

This will be another close game; either team can walk away victorious. The quality across the GEN team should prove too much for TES. When a game brings two of the best up against each other, it is hard to say if any bet is safe, but a GEN win is likelier.

Game 4 – BLG VS LNG

Here, we have the only game from day two in which two teams from the same domestic league face each other. The LPL first seed vs the LPL third seed promises to be an exciting game, as these teams already know each other well. Will they stick to what they know or try to catch the other team by surprise?

BLG was expected to win on day one against lesser opposition in MDK. They had a messy start, where they fed two kills into MDK, but from there on, it was flawless. Knight was on his famous Ahri pick, where he had an incredible 86% win rate on the champ throughout his career before this match. Then you have the bot lane duo of Elk and ON, who showed their quality in this match.

LNG was also expected to win their opening game against the much lower-ranked LCS second-seeded TL. They started the game slowly but always maintained control, even when the game was even in terms of gold and objectives. The Sejuani pick from Weiwei was fantastic, but it is not a pick we have seen prioritised so far. After this performance it may be taken away in this match. Gala was monstrous on the Jhin. Finishing with a KDA of 9/1/7, his influence was crucial throughout.

Betting Tip

The odds are heavily in favour of a BLG win here. Looking at the betting site, GG.Bet BLG has strong odds of 10/31, while LNG has much less favourable odds of 43/20. (Odds subject to change) If you want to place a bet on a game from day two, BLG is looking to be a safe bet.

Game 5 – T1 Vs PNG

The current Worlds title holder lost their opening game and dropped into the 0-1 pot. A team of this pedigree would always be a tough draw for any team, and PNG has drawn it.

T1 is in a difficult moment right now. They have not performed domestically to their usual standard and lost on day one of the Swiss Stage. They will be looking to bounce back here with a statement victory. It is a game they are expected to win, but they will want to do it in a manner that instils a fear factor in them. The T1 roster will be motivated coming into this, and we should expect Oner to have a massive influence on the map, controlling every objective.

As for PNG, it will be a tough draw to take. T1 and WBG are the two teams everyone would want to avoid here; unfortunately, PNG got T1. Coming from the CBLOL region, there are low expectations, as the quality of their region and that of others tend to have a noticeable skill gap. Nonetheless, they showed great determination to make it out of Play-Ins and want to put up a good fight here. Against G2, they were unable to get much done. But they may now be better prepared and adjusted for the level of competition at the Swiss Stage.

Betting Tip

Referring to the above points, T1 would always be the heavy favourite for this match. The current odds of 1/20 for a T1 win on GG.Bet this contrasts starkly with the 13/2 odds offered for a PNG win. (Odds are subject to change.) This is probably the safest bet available on day two.

Game 6 – PSG VS MDK

We have a rematch of a game we saw in Play-Ins for this match. That match was a Bo3, and MDK eventually won 2-1. This is a winnable game for both teams, and they will be eager to ensure that they do not score 0-2 at the start of the Swiss Stage.

On day one, PSG was given a tough draw against HLE. They could not control the lanes, and eventually, the game snowballed away from them. Coming into this game, they will be more confident that they can get a positive result. They are a team that can play at a high level despite what their region might tell you. They were out-drafted on day one and will come into this match with that in mind. Putting key players Betty and Maple on carry champions will be the priority, as they were the team’s best outlets through Play-Ins.

For MDK, day one was a nightmare. Being drawn against BLG would never be nice, but the fact that it was the day’s first game added that pressure. They will take some valuable lessons from that defeat. In an era where lane swap meta has returned, they were caught out too easily early on. They had to burn summoner spells, leaving them vulnerable. There was a moment of hope as Myrwn picked up a double kill early on, but it was short-lived. MDK prioritised the Syndra pick for Fresskowy, but they could not provide coverage for him, and BLG made the game unplayable. This lesson is learned for MDK, and we will see a different approach in this game.

Betting Tip

It is expected to be a close game here, but MDK is slightly favoured. You can see the current odds on GG.Bet that MDK are somewhat favoured, with odds of 100/137, whilst PSG have odds of 101/100. (Odds subject to change) The MDK roster should have enough quality to bounce back here and win as they did in Play-Ins.

Game 7 – WBG VS TL

Just last year, we saw WBG in the Worlds Finals. It has been a disappointing year for WBG since they missed out on MSI and only qualified as the fourth seed from the LPL. For TL, it has been a year of improvement. They performed well at MSI and the Esports World Cup.

On day one, WBG faced tournament favourites GEN. They started the game well, with small leads and advantages across the team. However, as the game went on, GEN began to pull these leads back, and WBG could not maintain their early momentum. That game showcased the quality of this WBG team. Coming into this, they will be confident of a relatively smooth game where the difference in roster quality will show.

After facing one LPL team on day one, TL is tasked with yet another LPL team here. Day one was not disastrous for TL. They were able to get some kills on the board, take objectives and remain near level in gold for the majority of the match. They put in an admirable display against a much higher-ranked opponent. This game will prove to be another tough one for the TL roster. To succeed, they must ensure every member is at their best and on the same page. They have an experienced previous Worlds winner on their roster with CoreJJ, and he will be someone the team looks to for guidance.

Betting Tip

It will be no real surprise that WBG is the favourite in this matchup. With odds of 15/13 on GG.Bet compared to the odds of 9/5 for a TL win. (Odds subject to change) There is a significant skill gap between the LPL and the LCS. This should prove to be too much for TL to overcome.

Game 8 –  FNC VS GAM

We saw this matchup at MSI earlier this year. That was a Bo3 series that FNC won comfortably 2-0. Once again, seeing anything other than another comfortable win for the LEC team is difficult.

FNC were put up against DK in their first match of the Swiss Stage. While there was some hope the LEC team might win, they were somewhat expected to be defeated. One major positive of that defeat was that ADC Noah had a great game. He finished with a KDA of 7/2/1. He was their biggest threat, which will benefit his confidence. Noah is a fantastic outlet for FNC but has struggled to perform internationally, primarily due to his confidence in his ability. If FNC can keep Noah confident, they can make it through the Swiss Stage.

GAM will always be the underdogs in most of their Swiss Stage matches. They were drawn against FLY on day one, and there was some hope that they might have gotten a positive result. In the end, however, the quality of FLY and how they controlled all aspects of the game were too much for GAM to overcome. In this game, they will seek to get experienced jungler Levi more influence across the map and play through Top Laner Kiaya.

Betting Tip

FNC is the obvious favourite in this, with the odds of 5/13 on GG.Bet meanwhile, GAM has odds of 9/5. (Odds subject to change) Once again, the quality of FNC should prove too good for GAM.

Final Thoughts

After a fantastic day one, we look set for another great day here. There are plenty of great matchups and even better betting opportunities. Hopefully, after going through all eight games ahead, you will find yourself in a great place to start betting on the League of Legends Worlds event.
