ESB ProVision: The Only Player That Can Play Pyke at Worlds

Welcome to ProVison by ESB. Today, we will examine the T1 vs. Gen.G series, particularly Keria’s performance on his Pyke pick.

After this series, T1 looks like a potential world champion. Well-structured team fights and creative picks from Keria make T1 the favourites going into this final Bo5 series. [conversion-linkoperator=”301”]With current odds of 20/31 backing a T1 win on GG.Bet [/conversion-link] compared to the 57/50 odds for BLG to win. (Odds subject to change)

Keria In Game Four – The Pyke Pick

It was game four of this series where Keria was able to pick Pyke up in champ select. Keria is a support player that typically takes more resources than others might. This means he can have a massive positive impact on the game, or it can sometimes go the other way. He can sometimes be lacklustre when not afforded these resources. Game four was one where he got these resources and created plays across the map for T1.

A lot of these plays involved picking off the opposition support Lehends. He was on a Maokai pick, and it was tough for him to escape once caught out. The rest of T1 aided this by performing well across the map and punishing Gen.G at any opportunity. There was one moment when T1 was taking Baron, and Gen.G set up to take the Drake in return. Keria and his crossmapping ability on Pyke prevent this from happening. He was a menace to Gen.G on this pick, always in the right place on the map. It is worth noting that this performance was not even his best on Pyke at this Worlds event. He used it to have an even more significant effect on their series against TES.

The Counter to Pyke

This match saw Kiin take the Poppy up in the top lane, an excellent counter to Pyke. Kiin could dodge ganks effectively and deny Keria’s resets, which can be lethal on Pyke. In the mid-game, we saw Gen.G win a fight that could have turned the series around. They were able to nullify the Pyke pick potential. This, combined with Faker being taken out of the fight temporarily, led to a disjointed T1 and Gen.G targeting them individually. That fight led to Gen.G getting Baron and levelling up the gold difference, and it looked set to go to game five.

The Game Ending Fight

Initially, it looked like this fight was swinging towards Gen.G. Keria, and Oner quickly changed that and turned it around. They picked off four members of Gen.G. This allowed them to march down mid and secure the 3-1 victory. It was a successful series for T1, boosting their chances of winning Worlds 2024. It also convinced a lot of fans that they would complete back-to-back titles.

Will We See Pyke In The Final?

It is unlikely that Keria will select Pyke in the final. If you want more insight into the Worlds final, you can read our ESB preview here. Pyke is not the strongest of picks, and when teams figure out how to play against it, it will most likely be unplayable. Because of this, we don’t believe Keria will lock it in during the Grand Final stage.
