Knockout Stage Day 2 Preview: HLE Statement Win?

On day two of the knockout stage, we see HLE face BLG. This clash is exciting, as both teams were considered favourites in the tournament. It is almost a shame they face off this early.

This will be a thrilling Bo5 series with pure quality across both rosters. BLG has been performing below their standard throughout Worlds, whereas HLE has been consistent and dominant as expected. As the format is now single elimination, teams can not afford to be complacent or below standard.

The Teams

In this section, we will give a preview of the series ahead. This includes discussing each team, their recent performances, and some insight into the players. Each team’s rosters have such a high calibre of players, making the series much more complicated to predict.

HLE

Last time out for HLE, they found themselves advancing after a 2-1 victory over FLY. Winning was always likely for HLE, but the fact they dropped a game was almost a shock. That is no disrespect to FLY, as they have performed to such an excellent level. But HLE will have higher standards than losing a map to a team ranked so much lower.

So far, the prominent performers on this HLE roster have been Top-laner Doran, Jungler Peanut, and ADC Viper. Looking at the series against FLY, these three were at the centre of all good plays. Peanut demonstrates such control over the map, prioritising the lanes early and translating that into objectives. In this series, there will be plenty of eyes on Mid-laner Zeka. As a previous Worlds winner, he knows what it takes to win. So far, he has performed consistently but has yet to be a standout performer. In game three against FLY, he was allowed the Sylas pick. He thrives on the AP assassin picks. Hopefully, we will see him on more of them in this series.

BLG

BLG faced G2 in their last series. From a neutral point of view, it was a thrilling watch. The series eventually went in BLG’s favour with a 2-1 win after some intense play, during which ADC Elk looked unstoppable. It was a very mixed series for BLG. Knight, BIN, and XUN controlled the game in game one as G2 heavily focused on Elk. This allowed the rest of BLG to scale and gain advantages. The G2 draft was highly vulnerable when their Ults were down, and BLG exploited that. Game two was poor from a BLG perspective. They were out-drafted and could not stop the game from snowballing away from them in the end. A significant factor in this was G2 picking Yasuo. To better understand how that pick affected the game, you can see the ProVision by ESB analysis on our YouTube channel at the top of the page or in the article form here.

Game three was thrilling and unpredictable to watch. The turning point came around a baron fight. G2 tried to sneak a baron, but BLG turned it around and got it for themselves. From then on, BLG gained control, and they never looked like letting it go. ADC Elk could not be silenced in this game and was unstoppable on the Ezreal pick. This series against HLE will be a completely different level of competition. The pressure will be on BIN and Elk to perform; Knight is always consistent in the mid-lane, so he will be confident in beating Zeka in the lane.

Betting on HLE vs BLG

As we advance through the tournament, these matchups become much closer and more challenging to predict. Each series is a Bo5, which adds another layer to predictions. Let’s take a look at the betting odds on GG.Bet for this series. As expected, based on the performances shown in this event, HLE is the slight favourite. The odds of a HLE are 100/137, whereas a BLG win has odds of 101/100. (Odds subject to change) Looking at how each team has performed so far, it is unsurprising that HLE is the favourite. You cannot count this BLG roster out, as they have the quality to beat anyone of their day. For more betting advice, check out our LoL Worlds betting page.

Final Thoughts

These teams are two of the standout performers through 2024. HLE won the LCK season finals, and BLG did the same in the LPL and was a finalist at MSI 2024. Whoever wins this series has a good chance of going to the final and winning Worlds. It is set up to be a highly competitive series that will probably go the total distance and give us five games.
