ProVision by ESB: Is Massu the Most Talented Rookie Ever?

Welcome to another article from ProVision by ESB. Today, we will be looking at the FlyQuest vs Gen.G series. We will pay close attention to FlyQuest ADC Massu and his impact on this series.

Flyquest put in a fantastic effort in this series. And for a short while most people’s Pick’ems seemed lost — especially as Gen. G were the apparent favourites coming into this series. FlyQuest fought brilliantly though and won two games in this series before losing in the final match to settle the score at 3-2.

What Did FlyQuest Do?

Throughout their Worlds 2024 journey, FlyQuest proved hard for the Eastern teams to beat. How did they achieve this? A significant factor will be that they did not scrim against Eastern teams. This better hides their strategies. On top of this, they also leaned towards picking non-meta champions when possible to catch other teams off guard, as they would have needed to prepare for that. That is a tactic evident in this series.

Let’s Talk About Massu

He is only in his rookie year but plays like a world-class ADC in many aspects of his game. The role of ADC demands that you be able to deal with serious damage while remaining safe and not dying — a skill he has showcased many times in this series. He also showed his mechanical ability when dealing with a flank. Gen.G toplaner Kiin flanked from the fog of war. When a high-damage Renekton jumps on the ADC, they often just get burst down and die. Massu showed great reactions and utilised his Zhonya’s Hourglass item to remain safe whilst his team got the Renekton away from him. In game three, he was monstrous on the Kai’sa pick with a KDA of 11/0/8.

FlyQuest Shortcomings

Unfortunately for FlyQuest, Massu and the rest of the team do not keep those standards up for the remaining two games, and Gen.G takes both to ensure the win. Massu could not get into positions to deal the damage required, and Gen.G just picked them apart.

What FlyQuest Taught Us

FlyQuest provided some great moments during Worlds 2024. Their off-meta picks provided great entertainment that no other team dared bring. They proved difficult for Eastern teams to play against, which shows that the gap between the Western and Eastern regions can be closed. Massu is a promising and fun-to-watch ADC for NA. We hope his form continues into 2025 and to see the return of FLyQuest at the next international event.

What Next For Gen.G?

Gen.G struggled much more than anyone expected in this series. But that is somewhat down to the fact that they were playing a problematic Western team, who set up to catch them off guard and make them uncomfortable across the map. With only Eastern teams remaining now, Gen.G will return to being that formidable team that is favourite to win the Worlds. The odds for a Gen.G victory over T1 in the semi-finals is 20/33. In comparison, a T1 win is 6/5. (Odds subject to change) Small margins will likely decide this series and go the full five games. Check our preview for more information about the Gen.G vs T1 series.
