That time of the year is nearly upon us again, the magnificent League of Legends Worlds tournament. It only feels like yesterday that we saw T1 lift the title again.
Now, before we reach the main event, we go through play-ins. Play-ins are a team’s last chance to qualify for the main event. Let’s take a closer look at one game in particular. 100 Thieves versus Movistar R7 is sure to be a good game.
So, let’s dive right in. First, we’ll look at 100 Thieves from the NA (North America) region and their journey to this stage. In their final match for Worlds qualification, they were up against C9, a team that regularly participates in Worlds each year, having only failed to qualify once since 2013. It would be fair to say they were somewhat underdogs and not favoured by many.
C9 arguably had the better roster, with more proven players. But 100T took their chances and outplayed C9 in terms of macro. This gave 100T more control over the game and allowed them to pick team fights when they wanted to. Deciding when a team fight is happening gives you a significant advantage over the other team. They could again outplay C9 and come out on top in these team fights. It has to be said that the ADC Tomo carried out in this series and outperformed his opposite ADC.
100T were eventual winners, taking the series 3-1 after losing game two. They showed great character and mental strength not to panic after losing a game to the favoured team, a trait that can go a long way in Worlds with high levels of pressure to perform.
Let’s look at Movistar R7 from the LLA (Latin America) region. Their 3-0 win in the grand finals against Infinity shows that R7 is the best team in their region. The 3-0 result was somewhat flattering to deceive. You would have expected a dominant display with a result like that. That was not the case here. The series was full of close moments and was tense throughout.
The current star player at R7 is the top laner, Summit. He is excellent at winning lane and getting himself ahead. Beyond that, creating opportunities for team fights once the laning phase is over is another strength he showcases. He is a player R7 currently relies on to make things happen.
There is a notable disparity between the regions regarding the level of play and infrastructure. R7 will likely struggle in this first series as they will still be adjusting to the increased level of gameplay that 100T are already used to.
You must consider differences like this when making a prediction, especially if you are betting on the game’s outcome.
We predict a 2-0 win for 100T, but R7 can take a game if Summit is not properly contained. The 100T top laner Sniper should have enough to mitigate the threat of Summit and be a comfortable series for 100T.
