With the Swiss Stage behind us, we move into the knockout stages, starting with the quarter-final matches. These consist of four games, all of which are Bo5 from now on.
We have four days of quarter-finals, and here at ESB, we will provide previews for each. Starting with day one, we have LNG vs. WBG. Two LPL teams face off against each other, and both will have high hopes in this series. Now, in the single-elimination format, each team has everything to lose.
LNG was one of the first teams to advance to the knockout stage after going 3-0 in the Swiss Stage. To learn how they achieved that, check out the ProVision by ESB YouTube video above, which explains it in great detail. You can also check our ProVision article here.
This LNG team has been one of the tournament’s surprises so far. We all know the quality of this roster, but LNG tends to underperform in these moments. They beat some big teams on their way to being 3-0, beating fellow LPL team and number one seed BLG and LCK number three seed DK. Now they return, knowing what to expect from them is hard because they advanced so early. Mid-laner Scout has been a critical component of this team and a tremendous driving force of their success. He was monstrous on the heavily prioritised Yone pick. It will likely be banned from him in this series. LND has had one of any team’s most successful Worlds tournaments so far.
For WBG, it has been a very mixed event. They fell into the 1-2 bracket but recovered from this. Next, they squeaked past a below-standard FNC to go 2-2. Finally, they faced up against DK in an even matchup regarding odds. The series ended with WBG winning 2-1 after a dominating game three, where they pulled out the Morgana jungle pick. Until now, WBG had been very standard with their drafts, with no surprises or natural flair. This pick adds an element of uncertainty around them. The teams they come up against now will be thinking, do we need to prepare for picks we wouldn’t expect? Taking the win against DK has set them up nicely for this Bo5, but they will need to see massive improvement if they want to stay in this tournament.
When looking at the odds from online bookmaker GG.Bet. They align with what we have seen from each team at Worlds so far. LNG is the firm favourite, with odds of 10/37. Meanwhile, a WBG win has odds of 5/2. (Odds subject to change) Based on history, you would back WBG, as they were a finalist last year. However, based on this tournament, LNG is the prominent favourite and strongest team.
This all-LPL clash is set to be a back-and-forth Bo5, with both teams knowing each other very well. The form is not always the determining factor in a match like this, as the opposition is so familiar. I still expect an LNG win, but it will not be as smooth as recent performances suggest.
