Day four is the final day of the quarter-finals. It brings us to what is expected to be a more one-sided series. We see tournament favourites GEN face LCS team FLY.
With GEN going 3-0 in the Swiss Stage, it has been a while since we saw them in action. Meanwhile, FLY had to go the full distance in the Swiss Stage and eventually qualified with a record of 3-2. They ultimately beat their fellow LCS opponent, TL, to advance. FLY are the only Western team remaining in Worlds.
This section will discuss each team’s recent performances and provide insight into them and their players. This matchup features two teams that have been worlds apart regarding their journey. One has yet to show its full quality, while the other has to fight with everything it has to reach here.
GEN is one of the favourites to win the Worlds this year. Many people will have them as sure favourites to win this series, and it is clear why. Mid-laner Chovy is always in the conversation for the best mid-laner player in the World alongside names such as Faker and Knight. Last year, GEN crashed out in the quarter-finals. Since then, they have completely overhauled their roster with the additions of Kiin, Canyon, and Lehends.
The 2024 GEN roster looks much stronger on the international stage than the 2023 one. The MSI 2024 title has already demonstrated this. ADC Peyz is one of the best in his role. At the age of 18, he will only improve game after game. Every member of the GEN roster will be critical for any success at Worlds this year. Last time out, they had a Bo3 series against HLE, to who they lost the LCK season finals. They overcame past struggles and won the series 2-1. This will put them in a great place mentally, and their belief will be high in this series.
We last saw FLY in a Bo3 series against their fellow LCS team. The series was predicted to be close, as these two know each other well and were the two dominating teams out of the LCS region. FLY dominated game one, and it looked like a straightforward series. In game two, they showed lapses in concentration and quality. TL could easily outplay them. Game three was make-or-break for both teams. FLY drafted the better team comp, so they had an advantage from the start. They played the game at their own pace and made the most of any mistakes or slight advantages. We saw top laner Bwipo use the Galio pick, quietly successful on the Worlds stage. Quad was allowed the Yone pick and showed why it is prioritised by dominating on it. Support Busio also gave a flawless display on the Rell and provided the perfect engages.
This is an excellent FLY roster, and they have undoubtedly proved many people wrong by making it this far. Up against arguably the best team in the world, it is going to be a monumental challenge. They have proved they can take a game, as in the 2-1 defeat to HLE. This series being a Bo5 makes it so much harder to win for FLY. When it is a Bo1 or even a Bo3, you believe it is possible to overcome these teams, but a Bo5 does not give you the same level of hope. Each roster member must perform their best to compete in this series.
As expected, GEN is the overwhelming favourite to win this series—the current odds on GG.Bet for a GEN win is 1/100. Meanwhile, the odds for a FLY win are currently 11/1. (Odds subject to change) These are easily the most contrasting odds we have seen from a series. We all love an underdog story, which is what FLY is, but there is little hope for an underdog victory here. For more betting advice, check out our LoL Worlds betting page.
