The first game of Worlds 2024 is between MAD Lions KOI (MAD) and Vikings Esports (VKE). Both are participating in the Play-In Stage, hoping to advance to the Swiss Stage.
Here, we will provide an overview of each team entering this match, giving you insight into each team and how this match might play out.
2024 has been a rollercoaster of a year for MAD. They started the year with nearly a complete roster change, keeping only their Jungler, Elyoya. This was a great change. As a team with four rookies, they made it to the LEC winter split finals, eventually losing to G2. The previous year, MAD had been disappointing on the international stage, and it was deemed that an overhaul was needed. After winter, it started to go downhill. The spring split was massively disappointing, and summer was nearly the same. A tiebreak was needed to make it to the summer playoffs, which led to them reaching the season finals. At the season finals, they were rejuvenated. They made it to the semi-finals but lost once again to G2.
That run in the season finals saw them qualify for the Worlds event. After a largely disappointing year, they will come into this event with a good level of confidence. Elyoya is the experienced head of this team; he will be critical to any potential MAD success. Another player worth mentioning is Top Laner Myrwn. We saw his ability to carry games at the season finals. His champion pool is unique compared to other Top Laners, and that could be an excellent asset for influencing games at the Worlds.
Coming to Worlds as the second seed from the VCS region is a challenging start for VKE. After losing the VCS summer final 3-0 to GAM, it is not an ideal moment to be entering such a high-quality and competitive event. VKE will most likely struggle in their first series. The skill gap between the LEC and the VCS will be a massive jump in the quality they are used to.
VKE will look to their ADC Shogun as their best chance of achieving a positive result here. He can carry perfectly fine if he scales and gets fed in the game. However, it will prove challenging as MAD will aim to limit his influence on the game.
MAD are heavy favourites coming into this match. At present, they have 2/15 odds on GG.Bet to win; meanwhile, VKE is given odds of 4/1 to win. (Odds subject to change.) MAD is a safe bet to make. They should have quality across the whole team to silence every member of VKE.
