Day five of the Swiss Stage brings us to a make-or-break day for four teams. All four teams have a 0-2 record, so winning is necessary.
There are two Bo3 games on day five. This page will preview those games, discussing each team’s recent results and what to expect from their performance.
Game one of the day brings us two teams featured in the Play-Ins stage. Having both made it out of Play-Ins relatively easily, it has been a different story for Swiss Stage.
MDK had an excellent opportunity to win in their last game. They were again up against a Play-In team and would have been confident of getting a positive result. However, it was a dismal result for MDK in the end. They were outplayed at every turn by PSG. This MDK roster has some great players who can turn this around. Jungler Elyoya has fantastic playmaking skills and is often MDK’s most influential player. Support Alvaro has been prioritising the Alistar pick, but we have yet to see it work for him or many other teams. MDK might have to rethink their drafts in this series and use Mrwyn’s unpredictable and deep champion pool.
For GAM, the Swiss Stage has not been successful so far. They have had some of the better draws playing against FLY and FNC. Both games would be challenging for them, but these teams were their best hopes of a win on previous days. Now, they are in a must-win position. It is once again a game they could win on their day, but their day is yet to come. Midlaner Emo and Jungler Levi will need to perform here. Mid-lane has been MDK’s weakest lane in Worlds so far, so if they can use this to their advantage, they could put the game beyond MDK’s reach. GAM must be at their best to take a Bo3 series from MDK.
MDK is a firm favourite in this series – something we’ve seen before when it comes to betting on LoL Worlds. They currently priced at 5/14 with GG.Bet. Meanwhile, a GAM win has odds of 19/10. (Odds subject to change) It should be a straightforward series for MDK here, but their performances at Worlds have been overwhelming. A GAM win should not be counted out, but MDK should have the quality to see this one out.
This match-up brings us two teams with very different experiences at Worlds so far. PNG is an overachieving team. They were not expected to make it out of Play-Ins and are doing their region proud by making it to the Swiss Stage. TL, on the other hand, is having a nightmare at the start of the Swiss Stage.
Coming into the Swiss Stage, there were not many expectations around PNG. Making their way through the Play-Ins was impressive in itself. Facing G2 and T1 in their previous games meant defeat was likely. This game poses their best chance of securing a win, which must happen now. They have played well in their recent games. G2 and T1 always controlled the games, but PNG could sometimes make picks and nice plays. As this is a Bo3 series, PNG might struggle to outplay TL consistently.
TL would have expected better than being 0-2 at this stage. After a promising MSI and Esports World Cup, they should be more competitive at an international level. But it has yet to work for them so far here. Last time out against WBG, they played some excellent League of Legends. At one point, they swung a gold deficit into a lead. It looked very promising. They could not capitalise on this lead, so WBG turned it around and ran out winners. TL will look to APA to put in another impressive performance and the experience of CoreJJ.
As expected, TL is the heavy favourite coming into this. The current odds on GG.Bet has a TL win at 1/9, with a PNG win at 9/2. (Odds subject to change) Despite a disappointing tournament, it should be a comfortable series for TL.
For two teams, it will be the end of their Worlds journey. Each day of Swiss has been entertaining and contains a few surprises, so that we may get another one here. For the most part, there are clear favourites for each game. It is hard to see anything other than the favourites winning.
